Which included 20% of the British fighting force. ONE FIFTH IN ONE BATTLE. Which is essentially 20% of British men.
And it was such a disaster. The people who did the planning knew fuck all about what was happening, and kept ordering more and more people to be sent out to fight even though it was hopeless. They had to walk 6 miles into machine gun fire. Uphill, completely open. No wonder everyone fucking died.
And they were ordered to use the wrong kind of shells. They fired 12000 tonnes, most of which was just shrapnel and only 900 of which was strong enough to actually break anything down.
